Browser: Access Plexamp UI at to fine tune its configuration and play some music.Terminal: Enter the token, Plexamp should now be running, using the default sound card.Browser: get the claim token at (you'll need to sign in Plex if not done already). At this stage you have to provide a "claim token" used to claim your Plex Media Server associated to your Plex account Terminal: Untar Plexamp archive in the root home directory.Terminal: Download Plexamp archive file in the root home directory.Terminal: Install required version of Node.Js (12 or 16 from Plexamp 4.6.0 (still in beta)).Terminal: Install Nove Version Manager (NVM).Terminal: Open/ssh a terminal session against HFBOS.Without going into much details for now, here are the steps I used to install it in HFBOS (prerequisite: HFBOS installed and tested, ssh enabled in HFBOS, Valid Plex account + Plex Pass (TBC), Web browser): I have a dashboard dedicated to displaying the current music that I am playing on various speakers.Unfortunately I don't think a docker can easily do the job as each Plexamp instance is linked to a Plex account that is configured during the initial installation, unless there is a "docker" way to manage this scenario?Īlso, a docker layer may have an impact on the performance in RPI without enough memory/cpu. I cast the dashboard to one of my TV's with Chromecast (4K). If I am playing pandora, the pandora album art, and meta data are displayed on my dashboard, and if the dashboard is casted to the TV everything is displayed properly. This holds true with other sources such as MusicAssistant, etc. When I play plex music on my speakers, my special dashboard displays correctly in home assistant. I get the album art and I get the other metadata. HOWEVER, when I cast the dashboard to the TV with Chromecast I get all of the metadata, but instead of the album art I get a picture of a Google Nest Hub instead of the album art. If I bypass Home Assistant completely, and simply cast Plex directly from my phone to the TV, I get the album art without an issue.Īnyone have any clues? What version of Home Assistant Core has the issue?Ģ022.10.Plex is one of the best services for hosting your own media collection and streaming it to all your other devices, and now the developers at Plex are working on a way to stream your music to a Raspberry Pi. Plex lets you store a collection of music files to stream to any other device with the Plex app, but the Plex team also has a dedicated music player called Plexamp with a cleaner interface. You can already install Plexamp on mobile devices, as well as macOS, Windows and Linux, but there has been work in the past on a "headless" version of Plexamp as a streaming target. The idea is that you could install the headless version on a low-end PC, which could output audio based on commands from another device. It's like the now discontinued Chromecast Audio or Amazon Echo Input, except just for Plex (and uses existing hardware). RELATED: How to Set Up Plex (and Watch Your Movies on Any Device)Įlan Feingold, CTO and co-founder of Plex, shared an early build of a Plexamp server for the Raspberry Pi on Tuesday. Once it's downloaded to a Pi and opened, you can play music through a web interface. On any web browser on the same local network, or choose the Pi as the output in the Plexamp app on other devices. You can also install Plexamp Server as a system service that starts on boot, for a more Chromecast Audio-like experience. There's even support for the PiFi Digi+ board, which attaches to the top of a Raspberry Pi and adds an improved audio chip and optical output. This isn't the first time that Plex has experimented with a remotely accessible version of Plexamp for the Raspberry Pi. There were a few betas in 2019, but this version required an authentication token taken from earlier versions of Plexamp and an older (now unsecured) version of Node. This new version is still in its early stages, but setup is much less complicated than previous attempts. It's unclear at this point when (or if) headless versions of Raspberry Pi will be supported at the same level as Plexamp on other platforms. With Chromecast Audio and Echo Input now discontinued, there are far fewer options for casting your own music collection to your home speakers. Google doesn't currently sell any Chromecasts or smart displays/speakers with a dedicated audio output, and while there are Alexa smart speakers with this feature, Plex's integration with Alexa isn't great.
